Reading Therapy Cheryl Cupido Port Elizabeth
Cheryl Cupido is an enthusiastic and committed remedial Reading Therapist. Her passion for this work was discovered late in life. As a young person she trained as a teacher but quickly found herself in the hospitality industry, where she moved into a management position and worked overseas. Here she learnt to understand and read people from all different cultures and backgrounds. She also developed a growth mindset, better organizational skills, interpersonal skills and became more flexible and able to adapt to changing circumstances and environments. All of this, she now uses in her current work as a READING THERAPIST as she customizes classes to meet each child’s unique needs.
So Cheryl has come full circle and is once again teaching and working with children, particularly those that struggle to learn to read and develop other literacy skills. Not only does she get to grow their knowledge and skills but more importantly their self-confidence, knowledge of themselves and the world around them. She feels blessed to be able to do such meaningful work, especially in a country where literacy levels are at an all time low.
As a Phono-Graphix reading therapist she assists children with integrating basic reading and spelling skills into real life contexts and gives them strategies and techniques to apply these skills.
Cheryl holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with a Post Graduate Diploma in Education. She is also a certified Trainer the Trainer as well as a registered Independent Phono-Graphix Reading Therapist. She has practical experience working with children with severe barriers to learning who exhibit challenging behaviours. She has an inherent capacity for building a strong relationship with each child through love, patience, nurturing and the teaching of soft skills. The children she works with feel loved and liked, quickly grow in confidence and develop a love of reading and learning.
Why Phono-Graphix™ specifically
The Phono-Graphix™ (www.phono-graphix.com), reading method has been proven 98% effective at addressing reading problems at any age or ability level. It has been aligned to CAPS and it was developed in consultation with junior and senior primary phase school teachers. www.readforafrica.com. It takes the sounds of the English language that kids already know and teaches that sounds represent letters and for every sound there is a sound–picture.
